Quick Notes

  • Most flooring boxes cover 18–22 sq ft — this tool uses 20 sq ft/box as standard.
  • Labor rates vary: DIY saves $1.50–$3/sq ft; professional tile runs $4–$7/sq ft.
  • Always buy 10–15% extra — returning boxes is easier than ordering more.
  • Diagonal or herringbone layouts require 15%+ waste factor.

How to Use This Estimator

1

Enter Your Rooms

Add up to 5 rooms. Enter length × width in feet, or type the total square footage directly in the area field. The tool sums all rooms automatically.

2

Pick a Flooring Type

Select from seven common materials. Each has a realistic low–high price range. Override with a custom price if you have a quote from a supplier.

3

Set a Waste Factor

Use 5% for simple rectangular rooms with no cuts. Use 10% for standard installs. Use 15% for diagonal, herringbone, or highly irregular rooms.

Flooring Type Guide

Hardwood ($3–$8/sq ft) — Most durable, refinishable, premium look. High upfront cost; lasts 50+ years. Avoid in bathrooms and high-moisture areas.
LVP / Vinyl Plank ($2–$5/sq ft) — Best all-around value. 100% waterproof, great for kitchens and bathrooms. Click-lock — excellent DIY option.
Laminate ($1–$3/sq ft) — Budget-friendly hardwood look. Not waterproof. Good for living areas, bedrooms.
Tile – Ceramic ($1–$4/sq ft) / Porcelain ($3–$7/sq ft) — Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, entryways. Porcelain is denser and more water-resistant. Higher labor cost due to mortar/grout.
Bamboo ($2–$5/sq ft) — Eco-friendly, harder than most hardwoods. Sensitive to humidity swings.
Carpet ($1–$4/sq ft) — Warmest underfoot, best for bedrooms. Sold by the yard at stores (9 sq ft = 1 sq yd).

DIY vs. Professional Installation

DIY-Friendly Flooring

LVP (click-lock), laminate, and carpet tiles can be installed by most homeowners in a weekend. You save $1.50–$3/sq ft in labor — on a 500 sq ft room that's $750–$1,500 in your pocket.
