Dog Age Calculator
Convert your dog's age to human years using scientifically accurate formulas based on breed size. The old "multiply by 7" rule is a myth.

Why Not Just x7?
Dogs age rapidly in their first two years, then slow down. Large breeds age faster than small breeds. A 1-year-old dog is roughly 15 in human years, not 7. Our calculator uses the American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines adjusted for breed size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the "multiply by 7" rule wrong?
A 1-year-old dog is sexually mature and roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human -- not a 7-year-old. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years, then the rate slows. Breed size also matters: large breeds age faster than small breeds after year 2.
When is a dog considered "senior"?
It depends on size. Small breeds become senior around 10-12 years, medium breeds at 8-10, large breeds at 7-8, and giant breeds as early as 5-6 years. Senior dogs need more frequent vet visits (every 6 months) and may need dietary adjustments.
What is the 2019 UCSD epigenetic clock study?
Researchers at UC San Diego developed a formula based on DNA methylation patterns: human_age = 16 * ln(dog_age) + 31. This suggests a 1-year-old dog is roughly 31 in human years. However, it was tested primarily on Labrador Retrievers and may not apply equally to all breeds.
